Why Your Workday Needs a Visual Soundtrack

The internet and TV seem to go together. Call it the work habit of the twenty-first century, but more people are using both at the same time. Add to that a mash-up of work and life, which has many of us plucking away at Blackberries and iPhones to keep pace with the office while on vacation or at the dinner table, and it’s clear that the television is becoming an essential component of our workforce.
The latest “Three Screen” report from Nielsen (PDF) states that the amount of time Americans spend using the web and TV concurrently has surged 35 percent from a year earlier. For the average American consumer, based on data from the fourth quarter of last year, that means 3 ½ hours of overlap between the two types of media. Almost 59 percent of consumers reported that they do this at least once a month, a slight increase from 57.5 percent in 2008.
Ours is definitely a culture of multitasking. Of course, this comes with risks. The greatest isn’t bodily injury. Rather, it’s the fact that you’re distracted and could make an error in front of a candidate or hiring manager … or your boss or a company executive.
When you think about the typical corporate recruiting workflow, it’s easy to see how the situation would unfold. Around two-third of the job is administrative, and leaner organizations are forcing more recruiters to continue their jobs when they get home. So, you push off some of the laborious stuff to when you’re on the couch. You throw on the television, half-watch your shows and review and reformat resumes. The likelihood of error is increased by both the distracted state and the rote nature of the work.
Instead of assuming disproportionate risk for what are effectively lower-value tasks, the more prudent move is to engage a partner to handle these tasks for you. KGTiger’s BYTE service, for example, can alleviate the workload associated with many repeatable corporate recruiting processes, yielding a more efficient workforce – not to mention fresher eyes for corporate recruiters. Reduce error rates and bolster reputation while allowing the recruiting team to focus on the areas where it can apply its talent and experience.
Don’t roll the dice by trying to multitask work and home life. Americans are turning on the TV while cruising the web, in part, because the lines of professional and personal life are becoming blurred. With KGTiger, you can accomplish more … while also getting time to recharge.
